An exceptional contemporary renovation of an historic Berkshires property, ''The Playhouse'' was built by George Westinghouse as part of his Erksine Park. Original wooden arches gracing the cathedral ceilings of the main floor are juxtaposed with a framework of modern structural engineering and act as a metaphor for the immaculate blend of historic charm and modern luxury that this condo epitomizes. When George Westinghouse designed and built his immense Erskine Park estate overlooking Laurel Lake in Lee, MA, he included a spectacular 6,000 foot structure for a particular purpose. The Playhouse, as it was aptly named, was a theater built especially for his son George Westinghouse, Jr. Westinghouse Sr., one of America's greatest innovators, intrepidly powered his mansion as well as The Playhouse with A.C. current, making it one of the first examples of a residence to have such an amenity. In fact, his mansion and The Playhouse boasted the largest private installation of incandescent lighting fixtures, as well as the first ever electric boat launch in the world at the time; the original light fixtures still grace the wooden archways of The Playhouse's soaring cathedral ceilings. Over the years The Playhouse, as well as the entire grounds of the estate, have gone through many iterations. The Playhouse was a grand and splendid example of modern architecture in the 1800s, and the new renovation grants it this distinction again today. A mix of haphazard renovations and an armful of deferred maintenance had left the building in poor condition. However, as is the case with so many of the Berkshire's historic buildings, the passionate attention and vision of The Playhouse's current owner have brought to light the structure's historic charm and quality, while perfectly blending in a renovation breathtaking in its contemporary styling and tasteful decor. The Playhouse is now a condominium of exemplary contemporary luxury. Within the arches of the vast cathedral ceilings, one can see the original wooden support systems, flush with 1st generation electric lighting fixtures, juxtaposed next to modern structural frameworks. Metal and wooden materials provide an essence of contemporary-industrial chic, reflective of the industrial age innovations of its original builder. Offsetting the mechanical nature of custom-formed structural bracing are the soft tones and warm atmosphere of the white pickled hardwood ceiling and bright, open dining and living areas of the main floor. A centered picture window showcases the hilltop positioning of the condo within the expertly planned and maintained Foxhollow Association. Polished cement countertops in both the main and lower level kitchens accentuate the stylish utilitarian flow while hand built raw wooden vanities in all of the five bathrooms provide the earth element necessary to embody the grounded connection to nature so prevalent in the Berkshires. From the upper level master bedroom, one can recline in the ensuite bathtub while soaking in the sunlight emanating from one of the two original cupolas that still grace the roof of this magnificent structure. Double closets and a tasteful master bathroom surround the sleeping area, and a tranquil reading nook separates the space from the original wooden staircase leading back to the open area living room. Opposite the master bedroom loft is the artist loft / office studio, separate enough to allow the focus necessary for diligent creation but open enough to the atmosphere of the home to provide inspiration and motivation. While relaxing by the fireplace in the entertainment den that is the lower level of the home, a full but subtle second kitchen allows easy access to a late night snack, or perhaps a juice or smoothie after a yoga session in the full, wood floored, mirrored exercise studio. Additionally, The Playhouse renovation has integrated world-class technologies including a fully integrated Sonos sound system, high-speed wifi network, internet-enabled lighting, HVAC and security systems are all loaded onto secure tablets. You can control the entire home from your phone or laptop. The condo association and supplementary amenities include lakefront property, pool access, tennis courts, and of course, close proximity to many of the county's most influential and cultural hotspots, including Tanglewood, Jacobs Pillow and Shakespeare and Company, among many others. This immaculately designed condominium is exclusively offered at $1,499,000.
